New To Yoga

Please click here to review our COVID-19 Protocols.

Before Class

  • Register for class online or in-person at the studio.
  • Avoid eating for at least 2 hours before class. You’ll have a better experience practicing on an empty stomach.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes before the class start time.
  • Check-in at the front desk, even if you signed-up online.
  • Inform the instructor of any pertinent injuries or limitations.
  • Remove shoes in the lobby area.
  • Leave your belongings OUTSIDE of the yoga room.
  • Turn cell phones OFF and leave outside the yoga room.
  • Be familiar with Class Etiquette (see below).
  • New to practicing? Place your mat in the middle or back of the yoga room so that other students may be your guide.
  • Try to stagger your mats so that you can open your arms out to the side without bumping your neighbor.
  • Be prepared to sweat and stay in the yoga room for the entire class.

What to Bring

  • Bring a yoga mat, full-length towel and bottle of water to every class.
  • Rental mats, rental towels and bottled water are available.
  • Bring your smile; this is YOUR yoga practice!

Hydration

  • Come to class fully hydrated and drink lots of water after class to replenish lost fluids from your yoga practice. Did we mention HYDRATE? In a heated yoga class, you can sweat up to a liter and a half of water (that’s a couple of pounds of water weight) and it needs replacement. So drink lots of water BEFORE you come to class.
  • We recommend drinking 32 oz. of electrolyte-enhanced water a minimum of one full hour before class, giving the water time to hydrate the body on a cellular level.
  • If you find yourself guzzling water during class or experiencing headaches or dizziness after class, you may be dehydrated. Try drinking more water before you come to class.
  • Add a natural electrolyte enhancer to your water. We recommend Ultima Replenisher, an all-natural, zero sugar, zero artificial electrolyte replenishing powder. Ultima Replenisher is available for purchase at the studio.
  • Coconut Water has all five key electrolytes: potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, sodium and calcium. Great to drink before or after class. Coconut water is available for purchase at the studio.

Class Etiquette

  • Arrive early to every class. All classes start on time!
  • Please refrain from wearing perfume or scented lotions or oils. Your fellow practitioners may be sensitive to these smells.
  • Observe silence in the yoga room, before, during and after class. The Yoga room is a quiet meditative space. How you enter and leave the yoga room is part of your practice. The lobby is a great place to connect and catch-up with others.
  • Make room for others. Everyone should feel welcome.
  • Don’t leave class early (front door is locked).
  • Understand that becoming lightheaded or nauseous is completely normal the first few times you practice yoga in the heat.
  • Clean-up your area after class.
  • Know that yoga is a practice, it takes time to cultivate!
  • Our instructors are always available after class for any questions you may have.

Practicing in the Heat

Be prepared to sweat! The heat combined with the sequence of the postures is what makes heated yoga so special. The room is heated to warm muscles, which allows you to work deeper in a shorter amount of time, seeing results faster. Heat takes the trauma out of stretching, heals and helps prevent injuries. Yoga is not just about working muscles: you are massaging deep tissues, glands and organs as well. As you work deep within your body, you may start to release “poisons” or “toxins” that have been stored there a long time. Your skin is the largest elimination organ in your body. Sweating helps flush toxins from your body, giving you a wonderful glow from head to toe.

Learn to love your sweat rather than constantly wiping. Wiping causes you to sweat more. Your sweat is your body working to keep you cool. Embrace it.

It is not unusual to feel nauseous or dizzy during your first class. Practicing yoga in a heated room reveals to us our present condition and inspires us to take much better care of ourselves. Usually the problem is that we do not drink enough water for daily living, let alone for exercising in a heated room. Nutritionists tell us that we need 64-80 ounces of water a day to help the body function properly. If you feel disoriented or like you need a good nap after your first few classes, this is likely because your body has begun to cleanse itself as a result of the yoga practice. Don’t be scared. After the first few classes this sensation will pass. The more you can relax as you give your full effort during class, the more energized you will feel throughout the class and throughout the rest of your day.

Take it to the Finish

Stay in the room for the duration of the entire class. Come down into child’s pose or savasana if you need to rest, and please try not to leave the room except in cases of illness or other real emergency. The intention is to keep everyone focused and in the present and to allow your body to acclimate to practicing in a heated room.

Your Drishti, or Gazing Point.

Where we look affects our balance, affects our alignment, and can transform the pose. There’s no need to follow the teacher with your eyes. It’s natural to want to watch the person who’s speaking to you, but unlike other types of movement classes, unless a teacher specifically asks you to watch a demonstration, you don’t need to watch him/her. They’re not usually doing anything worth watching. In yoga classes, teachers are usually walking around, assisting students verbally and manually. Lifting your head in down-dog to look at a teacher when he/she’s not really doing much more than adjusting the stereo volume or getting a student to straighten his elbows will just take you out of alignment.

Embarking on a new yoga practice is so exciting. Be safe, be happy, and enjoy! Contact us if you have questions!

1st time back to hot yoga after a number of years. Very hesitant, strongly cautious due to Covid liftings and such. I wore my mask at times for my own comfort levels. Thank You HY Chelsea for presenting a new, clean, fresh, very welcoming environment. I've let my guard down enough to sign up for an unlimited month. Appreciate the air filtration system in the rooms. My only slight discomfort is that no one checks temperatures or Covid Cards. I confess during the practice I get a bit paranoid. But, I try to find a time/day when it is less crowded and I stand near the door. Would also appreciate it if there could be an announcement at start of classes- to those who tend to have sweat dripping and pouring over their mats in to the space of others!! Horrid! Maybe raise awareness for ppl to be aware of that? Thanks for understanding and Welcome Back.

I have now had two classes with Tasha, this instructor is really insightful kind and funny. The desk host (Neil) is super friendly and check in was efficient. The room has great heat and moderate humidity (not overdone like some hot studios). A little tucked away third floor place close to FIT. Thanks for the wonderful classes, I can't wait to go back! Suchi Jennifer

I came in from out of town and had a great experience. The class was full but not overcrowded - just right for some great energy. The owner, Neil, could not have been more welcoming. The heat was just right. And the community was friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend.

I recently discovered this studio after a long haul from having children and the pandemic . The studio is very clean, and feels comfortable. The teachers are the best part of this studio. They have given me so much each day when I step on to my mat. The studio will work with you on discounts on packages that are available. Nasmaste!

On a recent trip to NYC I attended 4 hot yoga classes at Hot Yoga Chelsea. The studio is friendly, clean, and HOT! I had 4 different teachers, 3 who were excellent and unfortunately one who may have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed. I give her the benefit of the doubt and will rate the whole experience very positively. I will return on my next trip.

This is a wonderful hot yoga studio. The instructors are welcoming and accepting of you wherever you are in your yoga practice—from beginners to those with years of experience.Neil has assembled a great group of instructors. In the past, I tried hot yoga at other studios, and I was daunted by the doctrinaire philosophy and, frankly, the arrogance of the instructors. Not to be found here. Only acceptance of where you are at any given time, in the true yogi spirit.Hot yoga has been a great way finding relaxation, losing weight, and developing body confidence and awareness. Before practicing, I was having knee pain from an injury to my IT band of my right thigh, particularly when I walked down stairs. This has healed considerably, and I attribute it to the classes that I have taken at Hot Yoga Chelsea.

I’m excited to discover this studio. They offer a variety of classes - Hot HITT, Hot Vinyasa and Hot 26. The studio is clean and ventilates well. I have been in some gross carpeted Bikram rooms in the past that were really stuffy so I was happy to see these facilities were good. And everyone is really nice. The owner, Neal, goes out of his way to introduce you to people, making it a community feel.

I’ve never believed in organized religion because personally I’ve never felt the sense of community and spiritual connection so many claim to feel. Yoga has always been my church and is when I find that sense of community and sense of a higher power. Finding the right studio is really important to me and one of the hardest parts of the pandemic was not being able to practice in my “church”. I stumbled upon Hot Yoga Chelsea and was welcomed in with open arms. I was a little nervous but instantly felt at peace. The entire staff showed kindness and patience and I instantly gained that sense of community I missed so much. If you are looking for a studio that will bring you to a meditative state and leave you feeling stronger physically and spiritually (and dripping in sweat) look no farther.

I am so happy this yoga studio exists. i came here for a while before pandemic, and now I've been back a few months and it's better than ever. The teachers are amazing, they each have a slightly different vibe and if you come often enough you get to know each of them and appreciate their subtle differences in teaching the asanas. They are now teaching some Hot HIIT classes several times a week that are super fun and a nice change of pace from the yoga. The students are also very friendly and the whole place feels good to walk into. Highly recommend.

I came upon this gem of a studio after having followed some of my favorite instructors from a Bikram studio in Harlem. Since joining 6 days ago, I've practiced everyday, the most since 2020, and I couldn't be more impressed with the excellent instructors and friendly and clean environment. I can already tell that this is a place where community is built.

I’ve been coming to this studio for years and the staff and teachers have always been top notch. It is a great environment and they now have a variety of classes, but most importantly many of the classes are the traditional Bikram style which I love because it is much less stressful on my wrists! I highly recommend this studio.

An accessible and welcoming studio. They teach the classic 26+2 sequence, as well as hot HIIT and hot vinyasa. The instructors and owner are accommodating and supportive, whether it’s your first time or your hundredth. I know I can show up for any class and it will be awesome - all of the instructors are phenomenal! Students and teachers here are very committed to their practice, but with absolutely zero attitude or pretentiousness. The packages they sell are a great deal, plus they run additional promotions a few times a year.

I don't take the time to post a Google review very often, but this place deserves all the stars I can give it. I came to HYC just after the city started opening up again last spring, and I am so glad I did. As someone who has practiced hot yoga for nearly 20 years, I was looking for a new "home" to re-start my practice - and boy, did I find one! This studio is exactly what I look for as a place to not only hone my practice, but also to find a diverse, warm community away from the rigors of medical school. The instructors and staff are amazing, and the studio is sparkling clean always. If you are an advanced student, every single teacher is knowledgable enough to challenge you and push your practice further. If you are a beginner, you will feel comfortable and welcomed, without any of the "competitiveness" that so often can be found in yoga communities. Neil, the studio owner, genuinely cares about his clients, and makes sure every single student is happy, feels like they are wanted, and that they are a valuable member of the HYC community. If you're looking for a new home like I was, or if you want to give hot yoga a try for the first time, you should try this studio. Five stars aren't enough.

Just discovered that this studio is right around the corner from the hotel where I have stayed for years. Dropped in for a Bikram (26/2) practice and was absolutely elated. Super friendly and accommodating team. Mats and towels for rent for out of towners. But most of all, lovely studio and lovely energy from everyone ... from the front desk to the instructor/leader to the other yogis. While I'm a Bikram guy, they also offer a variety of other classes/styles as well. Will definitely be back. SICK that I've missed out for so long. N.B. they do have a small locker room and showers -- bring a lock and towel if you plan to clean up there.

I love this studio! I did hot yoga for years in California and was nervous to try it here in New York because I didn’t know what to expect. I’m so glad I found this place. The facilities are very, very clean. The actual space in which you practice is quite large which is nice because it’s prevents classes from feeling crowded. The instructors know what they’re doing and will kindly correct your pose if necessary to ensure you’re getting the most out of your session. All the staff whom I’ve encountered are so kind and welcoming. It really is such a pleasure to practice here. I highly recommend it!

Hot Yoga Chelsea has been a dream come true!! I just moved into the neighborhood and was looking for a studio to join. Upon arriving to HYC, the staff was super friendly and warm, as were the other students. It has a very supportive feel. The studio itself is very clean as well with locker rooms, showers, cubbys, etc, anything you need for pre during and post hot yoga! The classes are all so rewarding and challenging. I feel such an energetic shift after my class, leaving feeling stronger, more grounded, confident, flexible, and INSPIRED!! The teachers are all very informative and kind. I feel so grateful to have joined this studio. If you're looking for an awesome rewarding hot yoga practice (Bikram, Vinyasa, & HOT HIIT) this studio is for you!

words can not describe the love I have for this studio and the employees here! I starting taking classes in December and have been hooked to this "Hot Yoga Chelsea" family ever since... I am/ have been training for different marathons, while also being a dancer in the city... and taking classes here as much as I can has been a saving grace for my body, mind and spirt... I can feel myself growing in all aspects of myself with these classes AND inspiring teachers cultivating such a sacred, hard working space. Not to mention, Neil the owner has been nothing but generous and supportive of me and all my endeavors. From gifting me electrolytes to make sure my body is staying hydrated, to even just asking every time I walk in how I am and how my day is going, Neil and the people at this place create more then a space to just come a get a good stretch and sweat going... it's a family, community and you will not regret walking in and seeing what they are all about here!

This place and people here are truly a God send. The amount of compassion and courtesy expressed by the staff and trainers here eases the stress of day to day city living; believe me when I say, you will need it in that heat. The instructors help guide the practice with just as much care & compassion, all while putting you in a space to challenge yourself and grow. This place was really here for me during those Lock Down days ,when I losing my ISH. I definitely want this place to succeed, for it's long overdue that those, who displayLOVE, PATIENCE, ACCEPTANCE, & COMPASSIONnot just in words, but through actual practice begin toSUCCEED & WIN.
